What's the difference between the New York Post and Park Slope?

I'm so angry about this that I can barely communicate. The principal of Khalil Gibran International Academy, a Bklyn middle school set to open this fall, has been forced to resign. Her offense? Explaining the meaning of the word "intifada". The resignation comes amidst pressure from Bloomberg, the New York Post, and the President of the United Federation of Teachers (*my* union!). None of these Islamophobic fuckwads surprise me in showing their true colors. What does surprise me slightly (though I should know better by now) is that the supposedly liberal parents of Park Slope and Boerum Hill are themselves so blatantly racist. Fake-ass Free Tibet Organic Co-op pseudo-multicultural bastards!!! Reminds me of somethin' Phil Ochs used to say :

Ah, the people of old Mississippi
Should all hang their heads in shame
Now I can't understand how their minds work
What's the matter don't they watch Les Crain?
But if you ask me to bus my children
I hope the cops take down your name
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

That is seriously obscene. And it sounds like Bloomberg and others (not the NY Post, though!) recognize that the flack is absurd but *still* think she should resign because of public outcry. Xenophobic, bigoted outcry. Which almost scares me more, because it's essentially advocating the wrong thing and shutting up for the sake of quieting things down instead of taking the opportunity to stand up for what sounds like a dedicated and principled person and to perhaps educate some of that bigotry away. And that's what I feel like is happening more and more - no one seems to stand up to oppose wrongheadedness anymore. It gets recgonized as wrongheadedness but it's deemed easier to deal with to acquiesce rather than fight.

I've read the KGIA's guiding/founding documents. All sound great - ambassadors of peace, multicultural understanding, Arabic language education, etc. And since I live in the neighborhood, I would send my son (if he wants to go) there as our country/world needs people who can cross cultural boundaries.

But for the KGIA to have a principal who, at the very least, can't understand the current context of a word like "intifada," jeopardizes the very goals of cross-cultural understand the school pledges to reach.
